Muslims worship God alone. Muhammad ﷺ is honored as the final prophet and messenger, but Islamic theology treats worshipping any human being — including Muhammad ﷺ — as one of the gravest possible errors.
The confusion likely comes from the frequency with which Muslims mention Muhammad ﷺ — invoking blessings on him (“peace be upon him”) whenever he’s named, and looking to his example (Sunnah) for guidance in daily life. This can look, from the outside, similar to religious reverence directed at a divine figure.
But Islamic theology draws an absolute line here: associating anything or anyone with God in worship (shirk) is considered the one unforgivable sin if unrepented. Muhammad ﷺ himself repeatedly instructed his followers not to exalt him the way Christians, in his description, had exalted Jesus — a hadith has him saying, in essence, “do not exaggerate about me as the Christians exaggerated about the son of Mary; I am only a servant, so call me the servant of God and His messenger.”
Muslims pray directly to God, with no intermediary — not to Muhammad ﷺ, and not through him. He is honored as a teacher and example, not worshipped as divine.
