Short answer
Muhammad ﷺ preached for 13 years under persecution, poverty, and personal danger before gaining any political power, and died with very modest personal possessions despite ruling over most of Arabia. This pattern is hard to reconcile with a purely power-seeking motive.
If personal power and wealth were the goal, the strategy is hard to explain: Muhammad ﷺ spent the first 13 years of his mission in Mecca preaching against significant social, economic, and physical persecution, with no political power at all, and reportedly turned down offers of wealth and leadership from Meccan leaders in exchange for abandoning his message.
Even after becoming the political leader of Medina and, eventually, most of Arabia, historical sources describe his personal lifestyle as remaining notably modest — living simply, mending his own clothes, and reportedly leaving very little personal wealth behind at his death, distributing what came to him rather than accumulating it.
