The Qur'an describes Christians and Jews as 'People of the Book,' recipients of genuine earlier revelation, and instructs Muslims to treat non-Muslims with justice and kindness. Muslims are also required to believe in Jesus and Moses as prophets.
A Muslim who rejected Jesus or Moses as genuine prophets of God would be denying an explicit part of Islamic belief — Christians and Jews are described in the Qur’an as “People of the Book” (Ahl al-Kitab), recipients of authentic prior revelation, held in a specific, honored category distinct from how the Qur’an addresses polytheism.
The Qur’an also instructs: “God does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion… that you deal justly and kindly with them” (60:8). Like any large, diverse global community, individual Muslims sometimes hold views inconsistent with these teachings. That reflects individual failure to live up to the standard, not the standard itself.
