Most Muslims are not Arab — the largest Muslim populations are in Indonesia, Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. Arabs, meanwhile, include significant Christian and other religious minority communities, and always have.
Islam is a global religion spanning an enormous range of ethnicities, languages, and nationalities. Indonesia alone — never conquered by early Muslim armies, and ethnically Southeast Asian rather than Arab — is home to the largest single national Muslim population in the world. Large Muslim populations across South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Southeast Asia further mean the majority of Muslims worldwide are not Arab.
The reverse is also true: Arab Christian communities have existed continuously since before Islam across the Middle East, including in Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, and elsewhere, and remain part of the region’s religious landscape today.
Conflating “Muslim” with “Arab” — in either direction — misunderstands both categories.
